Narnia "The Great Fall" 8p NUCLEAR BLAST/MNW
"The Great Fall" är NARNIAs tredje platta. Faktum är att det är en ganska omvälvande upplevelse. Personligen tycker jag det är en högst trevlig sådan. NARNIA har alltid haft en ganska fast förankrad neoklassisk stämpel, något de haft både gott och ont av. På debuten anklagades de en hel del, i synnerhet i japan, att plagiera Yngwies stil och gitarrspel lite väl mycket. Detta har visserligen sakta blekts genom åren, men det är först på "The Great Fall" som den verkliga förändringen skett. Här finns inte en tillstymmelse till neoklassisk metall. Nej, de har inte sin kristna inriktning till trots börjat köra gospel eller psalmer. NARNIA har på ett högst positivt sätt anammat den progressiva hårdrocken. De har inte plagierat DREAM THEATER eller SYMPHONY X, utan snarare hämtat inspiration från genren. Jag tycker snarare de ligger närmre det territorium kollegorna i LION'S SHARE befann sig på "Fall From Grace". Det är alltså fortfarande låten och melodin som regerar, inte de tekniska finesserna. Här finns faktiskt några riktiga höjdarlåtar, varav min favorit är "Innocent Blood". En riktig kanon! Här finns en och annan riktig go tungrockare, i värsta SABBATH-ådran, som instrumentala "Ground Zero", där Calle visar att han nu fått en stor personlig touch på sitt eminenta gitarrspel. Den staccato-baserade "Judgement Day" visar hur tight sextondedelsmetall skall låta. "Desert Land" är ett stillsamt litet akustiskt vattenhål på vägen till den fjorton minuter långa och episka "The Great Fall Of Man". Får lov att erkänna att jag är högst positivt överraskad och imponerad!

When they released their debut-album called "Awakening" back in 1998, I was a fan immediately. Their melodic metalmusic with fabulous guitarsolos from supertalent Carljohann Grimmark was a delight for my ears. Especially in the instrumental track "The Return Of Aslan" Carljohann proved that technically speaking he could compete with the best guitarplayers in the world. On their second album "Long Live The King" Narnia could not hold on to that high standard of melodious metal displayed on their debut, although "The Mission" and "The Lost Son" still proved that these guys were exceptional musicians. Then in 2001 they made their best album so far,entitled "Desert Land", a spectacular cd with songs that sounded much more aggressive and heavier; e.g. "Inner Sanctum", "The Witch And The Lion" or "Revolution Of Mother Earth". Now,almost two years later,Narnia release their fourth album. And after listening to it for a zillion times I can assure you that "The Great Fall" is the best album from Narnia so far... The band has grown and they prove this by making this album the heaviest and most powerful album ever recorded. "Back From Hell" is an extremely heavy song with great guitarriffs, very powerful vocals and impressive guitarsolos. "The Countdown Has Begun" is a very melodic song with excellent singing from Christian and an outstanding hooky chorus; be ready to sing along, guys.. Their musical development is evident in the very progressive "No Time To Lose" and particularly during the epic-feel song "The Great Fall Of Man". That song, which clocks almost 15 minutes by the way, is positively THE highlight of this album; very complex with lots of variety, a huge choir from Stockholm and one brilliant guest performance; Saviour Machine shouter Eric Clayton adds another dimension to this song. Another guest performance can be heard on "Judgement Day",where drummer Anders Johansson (Hammerfall) makes a lot of noise. Of course, there is also an instrumental track ("Ground Zero") where you can marvel about the guitar technique of one of the best guitarplayers in the world; just listen and hold your breath... With a new bassplayer, Andreas Olsson (Wisdom Call and Stormwind) Narnia now have a very strong line-up and hopefully they will be doing some live-shows in The Netherlands, so that I can enjoy this extraordinary band alive and kickin'... By the by,if they had left out the two "weak" songs "War Preludium" and "Desert Land" I would have awarded this album with a perfect ten; maybe the next time. This year seems to become a superb rockyear,just think of all the magnificent albums we had so far;Ignition,Masterplan, Stratovarius, The Gathering, OSI, Porcupine Tree and now Narnia. What else can we expect this year, I can hardly wait....

The second album from neo classical hard rockers Narnia is better than their debut. The melodic songs have a better finish and the common clichèe traps have been avoided. The guitar has found its place in the the music that suits better this time. Liljegren is not the best singer in the melody metal class, but he does a decent job.

"Det tar inte fyrtio sekunder innan Jesus Christ dyker upp i texten. Nåja, kunde jag överleva att de himmelska musikanterna i Leviticus mässade halleluja stup i kvarten bör jag väl ta detta. Kan lugnt konstatera att Jönköpings-bandet Narnia väger upp sitt något övertydliga predikande med gudomliga låtar. Ett gott tecken är att jag sjunger med här och redan på andra varvet. Gitarristen Carl-Johan Grimmark är en lysande Yngwie Malmsteen-kopia, han spelar ofattbart snabbt, man kan undra om han får betalt per ton. Han kanske jobbar på ackord....... Nej, allvarligt talat gott folk, här har ni en kille som prickar in varenda ton med överjordisk självsäkerhet. Malmsteen, som numera sjunger på sista versen, får faktiskt känna sig slagen vad gäller teknik. De är överhuvud taget exellenta musiker och vet hur man trixar lagom mycket. Long live the king har faktiskt inte en enda dålig låt, men de lärda kommer att tvista om de ändå inte plagierat farbror Yngwie väl frekvent. Men vad gör det? En riktigt bra imitation kan väl vara minst lika njutbar som orginalet. Måste nog kolla upp debuten också. Var förresten tvungen att plugga Leviticus setting fire to the earth stenhårt en hel dag efter att ha hört Narnia. Kanske finns det hopp för denna förtappade själ."

NARNIA - Awakening (Nuclear Blast)

And so the remarkable renaissance at Nuclear Blast continues to gather momentum with the release of "Awakening", the debut effort from Sweden´s latest hot shots Narnia.
Fundamentally recorded around the nucleus of Christian liljegren on vocals(ex Borderline, Modest Attraction) and Carljohan Grimmark on guitars (formely of Sentinel), "Awakening" is unshamedly neoclassically influenced. Stylewise, it has the delivery and melodic drive of the kinda stuff Sweden was renowned for a decade ago (Glory, Treat, Skagarack), yet its roots lie undeniably in Malmsteen territory. One of the closest comparisons I can think of is the sound that Nation delivered on the "Chased By Time" album. I suppose that the Malmsteen comparisons are pretty much invitable given that Carljohan Grimmark openly admits to the Swedish demi god being a major influence; and this is no more evident than on the instrumental "The Return Of Aslan" where he steers his guitar seemingly effortlessly through a myriad of gentle restrained lows and desperately manic, spiralling highs. Believe me, technically speaking this guy can compete with the best of them.

But what about the songs ? Whereas I sometimes feel that Yngwie tends to get carried away and tries to create a song around his solos, Narnia, like Nation, have sussed that the best approach is to concentrate on the cake and then add the icing aftewards. Consequently, the eight songs on here all stand up individually under close scrutiny. Opener "Break The Chains" is a perfect vehicle to emphasise this point. The intro kinda cathes you off guard a little, bearing as it does a more than passing resemblance to Europe´s "Prisoners In Paradise", but then the main riff cuts through and propels the song majestically into melody laden, neoclassical heaven. That pretty much sets the scenefor the whole album really. "No More Shadows From The Past" has a beautifully structured bridge, and excellent hooky chorus, whilst "The Awakening" sees the band slow it down a notch or two with its epic feel and slightly progressive overtones. If you want passion, look no further than the emotionally charged "Heavenly Love", more seductive than Posh Spice on heat ! (Well maybe not.) "Time Of Changes" and "Touch From You" both have a Christian message, as indeed do most of the lyrics. However this never gets too owerpowering, and never at any time does it detract from the overall quality.

Fans of Malmsteen or Nation will go absolutely mental over this release, but it would make a fine and worthwhile addition to anyone´s CD collection. For fans of high quality, hard yet irresistibly melodic rock everywhere.

NARNIA - Awakening (Nuclear Blast)

Under flera år har övervintrande hårdrockarde haft stora problem att hitta nya skivor. Så gott som alla de gamla hårdrockshjältarna har lagt sina tights och gitarrer på hyllan och nya band som vill spela lite hårdare söker sig oftast till nyare genrer. Men nu har den svenska hårdrockgruppen Narnia letat fram sina dubbla baskaggar och marshallförstärkare och gjort skivan Awakening. Den här plattan är en ren nostalgitripp tillbaks till 80-talet och en dröm för oss alla som saknat långa gitarrsolon att headbanga till. Det går inte att låta bli att tänka på Yngwie Malmsteen när man hör Narnia. Bandets unge och mycket begåvade gitarrist Carljohan Grimmark har fått stort spelrum för sin bländande teknik. Han lider av svår tondiarré och vräker sig skala upp och skala ner i ett vansinnigt tempo, precis som Malmsteen. Carljohan Grimmark plågar sin gitarr svårt för att hitta nya, outforskade möjligheter med sitt instrument. Precis som Malmsteen. Men här slutar likheterna. Narnias musik är smartare, texterna kristnare och soundet modernare. På Awakening lyckas Narnia, trots sina tydliga 80-talsambitioner, att vara nyskapande och överaskande. Rock on!
